Iddon closes with Riders Cup victory
STOCKPORT’S Christian Iddon ended the 2019 Bennetts British Superbike Championship on a high, securing the Riders’ Cup with a brace of top five places in the Series’ triple header finale, at Brands Hatch in Kent.
Iddon claimed a front row spot for Race One, with third on the grid aboard his TYCO BMW S1000RR, just four-tenths of a second off the pole time of Championship protagonist, Josh Brookes [Ducati].
Christian ran on the coat tails of the Ducati’s of Brookes and Tommy Bridewell through the first encounter, only succumbing to a late Scott Redding [Ducati] charge, leaving the former World Superbike rider in fourth at the flag.
After running as high as second in Race Two, Iddon claimed a hard fought fifth at the flag, with Brookes, Redding and Bridewell followed by the Yamaha of Tarran Mackenzie.
Race Three of the weekend, the final of 2019, and Christian’s last aboard the TYCO BMW, saw the former Supermoto Champion come home fourth and Claim the Riders’ Cup, the trophy awarded to the highest position rider outside the Showdown, by a solitary point, from the Honda of Andrew Irwin.
Christian said; “To win the Riders’ Cup is a nice way to thank the team. I have been with Tyco BMW for four seasons now and although we haven’t achieved what we set out together to achieve, I really, really appreciate everything they have done for me and all the hard work and effort the team have put in.
“We have certainly pushed as hard as we can, and I am just grateful to them for everything.”
TYCO Team Manager, Philip Neill added: “2019 has felt like a rollercoaster ride for Tyco BMW however Brands Hatch brought a very satisfying end to our BSB campaign. We are extremely proud to see Christian secure the Riders’ Cup today after a very strong and consistent weekend’s results.”
