Nomads’ pride intact

- DES HINKS

CHEADLE Heath Nomads exited the Macron Cup on Saturday against a ruthless 1874 Northwich side.

What was always going to be a big ask for Andy Gray’s men was made more difficult when Callum Gardner fired the visitors ahead inside the first minute.

The Cup holders then effectively put the game beyond the Claret & Blues with goals either side of half time, from Matthew Woolley and Michael Koral.

Although Ash Harrison’s 52nd minute strike gave Nomads a glimmer of hope, two goals in the final four minutes extended 1874’s advantage, although the 5-1 scoreline was harsh on the Stockport side who battled all the way against the NWCFL Premier Division leaders.

Despite the defeat, Gray was quick to praise his side’s work ethic. “I was proud of our lads today and the work rate and effort we put in,” he said.

“They won’t face many better teams this season and we had opportunities. It was mentioned that we gave them more trouble than some Premier clubs have this season, so we will take that as a positive.

“We worked to a plan and if we take that effort and commitment on through the rest of the season we’ll give ourselves a chance of moving up the table and challenging for the top four promotion places.”

Off the field, Nomads were delighted with the 153 attendance, which was the second highest in all of Saturday’s Cup games.

Cheadle Heath Nomads hugely popular Bonfire Night will take place at their stadium on Norbreck Avenue, SK8 2ET, on Friday, November 1.

With a licensed bar and BBQ it’s always a fun night for all the family. The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm with the firework display commencing at 8pm. Admission prices are £3 (adults) and £2 (children).
