Falcons put rivals in a Spin

- BASKETBALL JIM BENNISON

THE Falcons were left flying the flag for Stockport Basketball club at the weekend, with the U18 men travelling to Rawtenstall to play the Lancashire Spinners, and the Division Three outfit taking the long journey over to the East coast, to tackle Kingston Panthers.

The U18s quickly picked up where they left off last week, laying the foundation for their eventual win with a strong first half performance.

Ahead 22-14 at the end of the first period, they stretched their advantage to 46-31 by the half time break.

The game still continued to follow a similar pattern to last week’s game, as the Falcons allowed their opponents to cut back slightly on their first half score, leaving the Stockport lads ahead on 66-55, on the final whistle.

The Falcons U18s will be at home on Saturday at Reddish Ball Hall, when the visitors will be Liverpool. The game starts at 4pm.

The long trip to Hull seemed even longer coming home for the Falcons senior team, having lost the game in the latter stages, to Kingston Panthers.

Level pegging after the first period, Stockport just lost touch in the second to finish the first half on 41-45 behind.

At the end of the third period the Falcons slipped to a deficit of nine points at 47-56, but rallied in the final quarter to cut the difference back to only four points, with three minutes left to play.

Sadly they were unable to keep up the momentum, as Kingston shot three consecutive three point shots to seal their victory, leaving the Falcons behind 76-86.

A strong game from Travis with 16 points, was well supported by Walton 13 and Salas with 11 points.

Next weekend the men are away to Lancashire Spinners, and the Lapwings Senior Women’s team are again without a game.
