Nomads into the second round

- DES HINKS

CHEADLE Heath Nomads reached the Cheshire Senior Cup second round with an excellent 2-1 victory at Congleton Town last Tuesday.

The Claret & Blues had to do it the hard way as well, coming from behind to win with two goals in the final fifteen minutes from George Blackwell and Ashley Stott.

Nomads will now be keeping their fingers crossed for a potential second-round clash against Jim Gannon’s Stockport County!

Saturday saw Andy Gray’s men make the short trip to face a West Didsbury & Chorlton side looking a good bet to make a quick return to the Premier Division.

But, another strong performance from the visitors earned a well-deserved point after a goalless draw that could easily have been a win, if one of a number of good chances had been taken.

“We created a lot of chances,” said Gray. “And on another day we bury them and win by a few clear goals. But poor finishing, and good defending from Wests, denied us the winning goal we deserved.”

The draw took Nomads unbeaten league run to five games, and they will be looking to extend that on Saturday when they travel to the current divisional leaders, FC Oswestry.

Then, on the Monday night, (Nov 11), their run away games continues with the local derby at Stockport Town. Kick-off time at Lambeth Grove is 8pm.

The next home game is on Saturday, November 16, when Eccleshall visit the ProSeal Stadium for a 3pm kick off.

Nomads’ reserves were bitterly disappointed not to grab a moraleboosting win on Saturday afternoon when they allowed Maine Road reserves to come back from 3-0 down to claim an unlikely point. Junior Santos hit two of the Nomads goals with Sam Riley adding the other.
