JESSICA HAS VITAL ROLE
WHEN the media report daily so much disturbing, sad and often painful news, you feature an article on Jessica McCarty who will be spending three months in a much troubled, dangerous environment of Israel/ Palestine (‘Jessica gives voice to human rights,’ November 6).
The Ecumenical Accompaniment has been arranging these visits for many years providing support to the Palestinians whose tragedy and catastrophe have been their experience since 1948, during which the Israeli Government has forced the expulsion of Palestinians from their land, restricted freedom of movement and prevented any expansion of Palestinian communities through control by the Israeli Defence Forces.
As you state the EAPPI gives voice to human rights and the Palestinian people need them more than ever.
The Israeli apartheid wall is a testimony to the forced separation of two communities and a vivid reminder of the treatment of the Palestinian people.
Reconciliation is based on justice but sadly that does not exist.
Yet there are many Israelis, young people in particular, who are reaching out to young Palestinians in friendship and peaceful activity.
The conductor, Daniel Barenboim’s East/West Divan Orchestra, comprising both Israeli and Palestinian young players, is an example of reconciliation; if only a political solution to the divide, after so long, could be achieved.
Jessica McCarty has responded to a role in supporting Palestinians that is vital and so important. She deserves our thanks and good wishes on her courageous decision. Tom Jackson Russell Avenue, High Lane
