Rich pickings for trio at Berry Park

- ATHLETICS LOUISE GELDART

LAST week, Stockport Harrier juniors descended on the National Cross-Country Relays at Berry Park in Mansfield. Given the downpours, the venue was tough to spectate at never mind run on, but Stockport put on a great performance against a National field.

The U13 Girls team, made up of the power trio Freya Murdoch, Saffron Meade and Sophie Ellwood, continued their domination.

The race was tense and fast as Freya stormed the first leg, returning in 5th place to handover to Saffron who fought and succeeded to maintain 5th place.

The last leg ended in a nail-biting sprint finish with Sophie continuing the season’s battle with Rotherham Harriers and only conceding second place by the narrowest of margins.

The girls took a welldeserved spot on the podium, adorned with their new and shiny bronze medals.

Stockport’s ‘B’ team also had a fantastic race with Ellena Walker, Ella Buckley and Niamh MacKintosh finishing an amazing 24th out of the 84 teams.
