Couple celebrate diamond wedding
ACOUPLE of Stopfordian Scots are celebrating their Diamond Wedding anniversary.
Anna and John Breen, of Houldsworth Square in Reddish, moved south of the border in 1961 with their first born Susan and now have 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Former barmaid Anna - maiden name Gowans - was originally from Dundee and met up with Cowdenbeath lad John, who was a miner and called up to the army, at hall dances.
They were married 60 years ago tomorrow on November 14, 1959 at the St Pius X Church, Dundee.
After arriving in Stockport, John, 82, and Anna, 79, first lived on Georges Road and then moved to Carnforth Road in Heaton Chapel, where they had three further children Nichola, Gary and Gillian.
Anna worked as a barmaid at the Grey Horse pub in Reddish and John worked at Bow Waters for some 15 years before then working and eventually retiring working at Gardex.
Once the children were older, Anna worked as a machine upholsterer making curtains, sofas and cushions.
In their spare time they loved to visit Reddish Working Men’s Club (the big club) on Saturday evenings to watch the entertainment. Years ago they would be the first up on the dance floor jiving.
Granddaughter Danielle Curley said: “They are very well loved and all of the family want to thank them for being wonderful grandparents and role models and a massive congratulations on 60 years of marriage.”
The couple are planning to celebrate together with a meal at the Puss in Boots in Offerton, with close friends and family.
