Daniel’s flying the flag for RV youngsters

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

REDDISH Vale Golf Club juniors have enjoyed another great season of team and individual success and it was celebrated in style with a full attendance of juniors, friends and relatives at their presentation night.

Vale professional Andrew Myers, whose son Daniel is the junior Captain said: “The presentation went really well and thank you to all those who attended. It was great to see so many happy juniors (and everybody else) all together, the restaurant was full.

“There were so many junior events and successes this year that it took around 45 minutes to present all the awards. All of the juniors received something.

“The club team received their many trophies and the youngest juniors who attended coaching received medals. I had numerous awards for most improved players, best sportsman, most potential etc. The juniors were well pleased with their awards and thank you to The Captain for helping me present the prizes.

“Daniel and I will be in Spain soon when he competes in the European Junior Open. This is played at the Alcaidesa Links resort near Cadiz which is right on the south coast of Spain with views of Gibraltar.

“There are two courses, the ‘Heathland’ and the ‘Links’. Each player plays two competitive rounds over each course, so four rounds in total counting their best two scores from four, one from each course.

“Only the leading players play a fifth round to decide the result. The rest of the field play a better ball Stableford instead.

“There are some very good young players (18 years of age and under) and the standard is extremely high. Last year’s event was a fantastic experience and a steep learning curve which I believe really motivated Daniel and helped him improve this year.

“Daniel’s putting stroke is a bit less aggressive than this time last year which can only be a good thing with the speed of the greens there. We have done a little work on Daniel’s hold (grip) recently and his rhythm has improved as a result.

“Daniel’s first target is to beat his scores from last year, which he is very confident of so we will take it from there.”
