Chor blimey, a goal glut for Hatters

- FAN’S VIEW IAN DOOLEY

I THINK that even after last weekend’s terrific result at Torquay, this Saturday’s game against Chorley would be seen as worrisome!

Speaking to many supporters through the week, that thought was shared, whether it was down to the 3-0 reverse earlier in the season or the fact that on more than one occasion over the past few seasons we’ve got our tactics woefully wrong or the recent upturn in Chorley’s form.

Whatever the reason there was an edge to the pre-match rituals for an awful lot of supporters.

In hindsight I should have had more faith in Jim and his team.

A 4-2 win was very welcome and it has to be said a true reflection of the game.

The Magpies were not the worst side we’ve seen this season, in fact they played some very neat football at times.

They played as a team and when they opened the scoring it wasn’t the first time in the game that they’d opened up our defence.

Their goal added to the tension but County stepped up and the quality of football was, at times, breath taking.

We had to wait 20 minutes but when the equaliser came it wasn’t really a surprise, Nyal Bell with a tap in after great work down the left.

We were then awarded a free kick and after a moment of hesitation the Cheadle End erupted after Festus Arthur capitalized on a goal keeping fumble to send us in at half time 2-1 up.

The second period was just as exciting. Devante Rodney, Tom Walker, Elliot Osborne and Bell (twice) all had tremendous opportunities to add to the goal tally but each time we broke clear of the Chorley defence the player made the wrong choice when deciding to shoot from distance rather than pass to a team mate.

It was frustrating and the missed opportunities could have cost us dearly but Nyal smashed one in from a tight angle and then Tom Walker scored one from even further out and we could all relax – the game was ours.

Maybe the lads relaxed just a touch too much, we conceded late on from a corner and I bet Jim was fuming and rightly so but the win and the three points belonged to County. We’re sitting in eighth with a minus goal difference (the only team in the top half of the table with one) but that’s going to change if we keep on like we have been doing.
