One could become three in store plan
PLANS have been submitted to divide up H&M’s store in Stockport town centre to create up to three smaller shops.
Landlord Peel L&P has applied for planning permission to alter the layout of the unit at the Peel Centre.
It does not mean the brand will be leaving the town.
The clothing retailer’s lease is due to expire in September and it is currently in talks with Peel.
H&M said it is ‘committed’ to staying in Stockport and hopes to reach ‘a positive agreement’ with the landlord over its lease.
In planning documents, Peel states that subdividing the unit would offer ‘flexibility,’ as smaller units would be easier to let, in the event that H&M did move out.
Documents state: “At present it is not confirmed if H&M wish to occupy the unit beyond September 2020.
“However, in view of the forthcoming lease expiry, flexibility is required to attract new occupiers if H&M vacate the unit.’’
A H&M spokesperson said: “Stockport is an important location to H&M and we are committed to maintaining a presence in the town.
“We are in conversation with the landlord about our existing store as part of our routine lease renewal procedure, and hope to reach a positive agreement.”
Peel’s planning application continues: “Peel have owned Stockport Retail Park for over 25 years and have made a significant investment in the park during this period.
“Peel are also keen to ensure that the retail park continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the retail market and the residents of Stockport and its catchment going forward.
“Over recent years, as a result of the increase in online shopping and retailers improving the efficiency of their sales floor, there has been a shift towards smaller floorplates.
“In order to ensure that the unit does not become vacant following the expiry of the H&M lease, it is therefore essential to have flexibility to subdivide the unit in order to attract occupiers.”
The application has been submitted to Stockport council this week and has yet to be decided.
