Lapwings bring league leaders down

- BASKETBALL JIM BENNISON

LEADING all the way on Saturday against the Conference leaders, Worcester Wolves, on their own patch, Stockport Lapwings ground out their best win of the season {65-44}, against the best team in the Conference.

Scoring the first seven points the Lapwings put Worcester in unfamiliar territory, rarely if ever having been that many behind all season.

Strong and affective defence helped control Worcester’s tall players, and the quick transition from defence to offence enabled Stockport to stretch their lead even further, and by half time they were 30-22 ahead.

Hitting the ground running at the start of the second half, Stockport maintained the pressure on their opponents ball handlers, slowing down and at times breaking down Worcester’s efforts to feed their big forwards. With three different players,

Collins, Clayden and Silikas, all showing they could hit the three pointers, the Worcester defence was in disarray.

With a twelve point lead at the start of final period Stockport continued with the same intensity, extending their lead while holding back Worcester’s offence, and putting together their best win of the season. Clayden [20] and Silikas {10] led the scoring in a 65-44 point win.

The Falcons entertained Liverpool II on Saturday at home, and also got off to a good start, establishing a winning position with a 44-26 lead by halftime.

Liverpool managed to reduce the deficit slightly but the Falcons still controlled the game going into the final quarter.

Trading basket for basket in the last ten minutes the Falcons eased them selves in to a comfortable win by 78-68.

Walton was top scorer with twenty points and and Travis and Curley added a further sixteen points each.
