Lauren’s boost for The Christie
LAUREN Jones has been one of Cheshire’s top golfers for several years and has her ambitions firmly focussed on a career in golf.
She began her golf at the age of six at Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Club and some 15 years on now has a handicap of two.
Lauren outlined her successes in golf which hit a major setback in 2018:”I became junior captain at Mellor at 16 and county girls captain at 18.Among my playing successes are winning the county girls order of merit and the William Bailey trophy in 2017 and I got to the semifinals of the Cheshire Ladies Championships in 2019’
“I joined Prestbury GC last year and won my first major -The Taylor Memorial in the same year
“I won the singles and fourball KO’s at Mellor in the first year that I was allowed to play in the them and I hold the course record at Mellor for ladies
“I came third in the men’s 36 holes scratch competition playing off the white tees at Mellor
“For my education I went to Stockport Grammar school from age seven to 16 where I represented the school in netball, hockey, tennis and rounders.
“I went to Myerscough College at the age of 16 for two years where I gained a triple distinction star grade where we had coaching once a week with our PGA pro Craig Lea where we learned psychology, philosophy, nutrition and the overall history in golf.
“Also we had the opportunity to do work experience at Myerscough in professional events such as Dunhill Links and Turkish Airlines Open and we also have a player development camp in Portugal in Vilamoura.
“Now I’m in my second year at university at Myerscough where theyare partnered with University of Central Lancashire and I’m studying a degree in Golf Management which involves learning about the business aspect in and around golf where we get to network well with ex students who work in the golfing industry.
“With my golf I’m still looking to play for county ladies after I’ve finished university as much as I can and within this year is to get my handicap down to scratch, to do well in the county championship at Bramhall GC and to be selected for county match week up in Northumberland and for Cheshire to do well.
“In 2018 I found out I had skin melanoma in the neck and had two operations over three months where I was out of golf for four weeks both times.
“The Christie and Stepping Hill, my local hospital, have looked after me really well through it all and they still continue to look after me for the next five years and see me every three months in check up and scans and I have been given a full clearance.
“To support the Christie I’ve decided to do a golf day to raise as much money as possible for them as they help so many people.
“The day is on May 1 2021 where the format is better ball and to my delight the day is completely full from tee times from 8am till 3:30 pm where the main aim is to raise money and have fun.
“We have prizes for the top three teams and have prizes on every hole for nearest pin in regulation, also we have both a raffle full of hampers and a silent raffle for a four-ball at Royal Liverpool.
“For prizes with the nearest the pins we have over 20 courses in and around Cheshire that have donated four-ball vouchers which is much appreciated.
“All entry donations and raffle money raised is going to The Christie as it such a great cause as everyone in some way has been touched by cancer.
“My future aim after I’ve finished my third year at university is to hopefully get a job within the golfing industry as at the moment I’m looking towards either working on the ladies European tour and work my way up to organising the events week to week or organising sports event and competitions specifically to golf in resorts.
“With my golf I’m still looking to play for county ladies after I’ve finished university as much as I can and within this year to get my handicap down to scratch, to do well in the county championship at Bramhall GC and to be selected for county match week up in Northumberland and for Cheshire to do well.
“I want to thank The Christie and Stepping Hill for all their support and work they do and for them looking after me so well, Mellor and Townscliffe for letting the course for the golf day, all the golf clubs and people who have donated prizes and four balls my mum (Karen Jones) for helping me organise the golf day, Rick Daniels for donating and the support throughout last year.
