Agendas must take back seat

- FAN’S VIEW IAN DOOLEY

COMBINING my one hour of exercise and essential trip to the shop, I bought the Non-league paper on Sunday morning just to see what the general consensus was with regard to football in the current situation, as seen through the eyes of other clubs in the pyramid.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

In a time when people are losing their lives and there is general fear throughout the land there are people in the game that still have their own personal agenda!

The clown prince of non-league football, David Haythornthwaite, otherwise known as the chairman of AFC Fylde, wants to terminate the season now, citing that clubs could “go to the wall” due to lack of finances.

This is a multi-millionaire who can afford to pay his playing squad and back room staff.

He says he’s thinking of the broader picture.

Relegation, of course, would make his pipedream of a place in the Football League by 2022 a little harder.

The same can be said of Peter Griffin, the Maidenhead chairman who, (as mentioned last week) wants a promotion but no relegation end of season.

Of course he does – Maidenhead are in the drop zone just like Fylde.

I only have one thing to say to both – football isn’t as important as life and death, you need to get your priorities sorted.

The past eight months can’t just count for nothing and the Football Authorities don’t need to jump onto any bandwagon.

Let’s just wait and see how things go and resume the season whenever, then adapt the subsequent following season accordingly.

If the FA and UEFA can sort themselves out and agree that the season 20-21 doesn’t have to start in August and can finish in June it doesn’t matter as long as people are safe and well. Sod the TV companies and let football retain its integrity.

On a lighter note, on Saturday, Nuneaton v County was on County’s YouTube channel.

It was the first time I’d seen the game with commentary, which was odd in itself! I didn’t realise what an awful game it was until then, on the day I thought we were world beaters, in reality the wind was incredible and how valuable was winning the toss?

I know I was there, I could see myself on the screen but I’d forgotten so much.

I thought Ash Palmer and Matty Warburton had scored a lot earlier than they actually did and we were cruising after only 10 minutes! Maybe I was intoxicated by the occasion or just getting forgetful in my old age.

It’s a great idea by the club to put these games on and I hear next week’s is a cracker too.

There are so many games that mean so much to each of us for a whole variety of reasons, why don’t you email Simon Dawson at the club with your suggestions, I’m sure he’d love to hear from you.
