MP backs new plan to improve rail network
MARY Robinson, MP for Cheadle, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of additional funding to level up the railway networks and economy.
She has already been working with the Government to open up local railway networks and has put in bids into several schemes, including into the Restoring the Railway Fund and the Towns Fund.
She is promoting a scheme to open up the Cheadle Village Station with improvement to the local rail links.
Part of the New Deal for Britain in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the Government package of measures is designed to create jobs and upgrade Britain’s infrastructure and skills to fuel economic recovery across the UK.
Mary Robinson said: “I strongly welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement for investing £5 billion into infrastructure, including our railways.
“The Government’s commitment of £10 million to tackle the rail bottleneck and capacity in Manchester is also hugely welcomed to improve not just train reliability in Cheadle, but also for large swathes of the North. It is vital that our recovery from Covid is sustainable, protects jobs and helps the environment.
“It is really important for our local economy to open up railway networks.
“I have consistently lobbied and worked with the Government to open Cheadle railway station and have also made a bid for funding through the Restoring the Railway fund.
“Opening up our local rail lines that were closed by the Beeching Cuts will enable more people to be able to access more environmentally friendly transport and allow Cheadle and the surrounding area to be better connected.”
