Isla, 6, in heroic dash to rescue injured mum
WHEN nurse Suzann Harrison fell from the kitchen counter onto her hard tiled floor, she screamed out in agony.
The 31-year-old mum was in so much pain she couldn’t talk.
But luckily her ‘hero’ six-year-old daughter Isla Harrison heard her cry for help.
“I had just missed my footing while I was cleaning the kitchen window...I crashed down”, Suzann recalled.
The mum, who suffers from a degenerative back condition, was unable to move following the fall at their Offerton home, on July 12.
“I couldn’t speak, I was just making noises. It was hurting so much. It was like someone was twisting my arm round and not letting go.”
Without flinching, Isla, who goes to Banks Lane Infant School, ran in and grabbed her mum’s phone.
She put it to her face so she could unlock the device with facial recognition technology.
She called her dad Oliver, who works at Border Force at Manchester Airport, to come home.
The youngster then dialled 999 for paramedics.
“She was talking to the call handler, reciting our address”, Suzann said.
“I wasn’t able to string a full sentence together. She got a cushion to put under my head.
“I didn’t know she knew how to ring someone like that.
“She loves the show Ambulance (a BBC One documentary about paramedics), it’s her favourite programme. She watches it on repeat. She was not stressed at all, she saw them put a cannula in my arm. She was just watching.”
Suzann, who works in the crisis response team at Wythenshawe Hospital, was in so much pain that she was given morphine.
“They gave me gas and air, Isla was holding it for me. She disappeared upstairs then put on her nurses uniform.
“They let her press the button for the blood pressure. She was happy to be there and was getting on with it.”
Suzann was rushed to Stepping Hill Hospital, where she was treated for a broken shoulder.
Paramedics were so impressed by Isla’s quick-thinking actions that they gave her a bravery award.
“I am so extremely proud of Isla, she was so brave and so calm despite hearing mummy sob with pain. She’s my real life superhero”, Suzann added.
“She was such a superstar. She took it all in her stride and I’m so very proud of her. Daddy got home and was also extremely proud of what she had done.”
