Peel’s the real deal with course record

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

STOCKPORT star David Peel has won many trophies and set new records during a stellar career in club and county golf since he joined Stockport Golf Club, where his dad Mike was the respected professional, 25 years ago.

He set a record for the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs with 192 appearances for the Cheshire team, who he captained for some years before stepping down from county team golf.

His other proud record came in 2011 when he set a course record of 64 at Stockport.

Then in a recent club competition David, who plays off +3 handicap, enjoyed a great day with a nine-under-par score of 62 to overtake his previous course record at Stockport.

David said: “After the lockdown on playing golf it was great to return to golf action and also very relaxing and I found myself playing really well.

“The weather was not the best on the day as it rained for most of the round and was quite heavy near the end.

“I set off with birdies on the first two holes which were followed by more birdies on holes 4, 6, 8, 13 and 14.

“I was still very relaxed coming to last two holes, with the record in my sights and had few problems in tapping in nerveless birdie putts from eight to ten feet on both holes to set the new course record to my delight and that of my playing partners Chris Unsworth and Eddie Frost and have great congratulations from so many club members on my new record.

“Can I beat it again – wait and see!”
