Joy and relief on results day
CHEADLE Hulme School has hailed its Class of 2020 as academic high-fliers.
Matching the success of the School’s Upper Sixth students last year, the vast majority of the 2020 cohort are now looking forward to attending their first or reserve choice higher education destination.
A large number of students will go on to study at the country’s top academic Russell Group universities, including Oxford, Durham, Sheffield and Birmingham, as they embark upon a variety of dream careers such as medicine and dentistry.
Headteacher Neil Smith said: “My sincere congratulations to our Class of 2020.
“Regardless of the fact 2020 has been a particularly challenging year, our students have worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserve the high grades they have been awarded, enabling them to pursue their next steps whatever the future holds.
“The resilience they have developed as Waconians has served them especially well during these uncertain times and will, I’m sure, stand them in better position for their lives ahead.
“Their impressive achievements should not be underestimated and as a school we’ll continue working with the exam boards to ensure our young people are treated fairly and their tremendous efforts are recognised with grades they deserve.”
Ten CHS students were rewarded with an outstanding three A*s or equivalent or higher, with four students awarded four A*, and three students achieving at least one D1 (a grade higher than A*) at Pre-U.
Top performers included Head Boy Peter who, alongside Jack and Oscar, achieved four A*s each. Maya, Lucy and Maia were awarded three A*s each with Kirsty, Catherine, Lucas and
Oliver receiving the equivalent of three A*s or higher at Pre-U.
Heading to University of St Andrews to study Philosophy and Theology, Oscar said: “What a morning it’s been!
“I’m over the moon really and I will certainly be celebrating in the sun.
“I feel really proud of myself in getting the grades I wanted, even in spite of not actually getting to sit the exams.
“I’m grateful to all of my teachers for their support over the last two years and I hope I’ll be able to thank them personally once we are able to have a proper celebration.
“I will certainly miss CHS but I am very much excited to start university in September.”
Peter is heading to the University of Oxford to study Physics and Philosophy.
He said: “It has been a strange week with the news constantly changing and after what has been a really unsettling time for everyone.
“I was really relieved and very nervous when I saw my results but I’m really happy.
“I’m really looking forward to starting at Oxford in September.”
Ollie is equally thrilled.
He said: “I’m so relieved to be heading to Leeds to do International business, with three A*s under my belt. What a result! Thank you to CHS for everything.”
Head Girl Laura, whose dream job is to become a travel journalist, is also celebrating after being awarded A*, A, B and accepting a place at University of Bristol to study English Literature.
Maya is another step closer to achieving her dream of becoming an actor; with three A*’s she has gained a place at
ALRA North drama school to do a foundation course in Acting before studying English and Theatre at University of Bristol.
She celebrated with her sister Mansi (Class of 2018) who also achieved three A*s at A-Level.
Maya said: “If something is hard initially, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it! Everything comes with time.
“Now I’m just looking forward to celebrating with my friends.”
In the first year that CHS has offered a BTEC qualification, the school’s young athletes also performed extremely well with more than half receiving a Distinction or higher in Sport.
Building upon CHS’s strong reputation in recent years for the academic EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), the School’s Lower Sixth are also celebrating with 60pc EPQ students awarded A*.
