I’LL APPEAL TO UNIVERSITIES
OPEN letter to Stockport’s schools:
Dear Headteacher/ Principal,
I am writing to you in response to widespread concerns that have been raised by schools both across the country and in Stockport in relation to the way in which students have been graded this year and the impact this will have on their future.
Whilst this system will be beneficial to some, there will no doubt be those who have been graded lower than what they would likely achieve if circumstances were different, and I am deeply concerned that many will lose out on positions at the university of their choice or on their desired course because of this.
I am also deeply concerned that, according to analysis by Ofqual, pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds have been hardest hit by the standardisation process used to award the grades, with those in lower socioeconomic backgrounds having grades proposed by teachers overruled.
The current cohort of A-level students should not be disadvantaged due to the pandemic and I wish to extend my help to your school and to those students who may not receive their desired grades, in any way that I can.
I am more than willing to write on behalf of any student who has been unfairly disadvantaged by these gradings and have been rejected from their choice of university as a result.
Should your school find that you have students who have lost out on a place this year due to the grades they have received, and they would like me to contact the university to appeal on their behalf, I ask that you provide me with the following information: 1. Name of Student 2. University they had applied to and university contact information
3. Any additional information of relevance (i.e. any extenuating circumstances, predicted grades, etc.)
Please do contact me with this information at your convenience. Navendu Mishra Stockport MP
