Jamie’s winning double at Romiley

THE Manchester and District Golf Alliance opened its new winter season at Romiley Golf Club, who provided a course in excellent condition for the players.

The Alliance has changed its format to timed starts due to Covid regulation­s and had great support from the staff at Romiley Golf Club

It was a day with two halves of weather with a fine sunny morning followed by a dismal wet afternoon and the star of the day was Davenport profession­al Jamie Howarth who posted 38 points to win the individual prize ahead of Dave Smith (Swinton Park) 36 and Scott Jackson (Disley) 35.

Jamie then doubled up as he and his Mellor and Townscliff­e partner Chris Alexander took top spot in the pro am section with 41 points ahead of Scott Jackson and Steve Misell (Disley) 40 and reigning Alliance O-o-M champion Phil Archer who partnered his Poulton Park colleague Mark Pasqual to win a cpo on 39 from Dave

Smith and Matt Murray (Marriott Worsley Park).

The top score of the day came in the Am Am section from Don Milligan (Ashton-on-Mersey) and Andy Hall (Styal) with 43 points taking them clear of Paul Traynor and Richard Margrave (Stamford) 42 and Steve Finan and Martin Dwyer (Stamford) 41.

It was the first competitio­n for new Alliance Captain Gary Brown (Glossop) who enjoyed playing his round with Phil Archer.

An Am Am Stableford at Avro was won by the hot trio of Chris Hynes, Thomas Bagshaw and David Fortune with 79 points, five more than Bob Holt, Jack Leech and Frank Brown.

The P Lightfoot Trophy at Avro was won by Leslie Fowler after a cpo on 42 points with Ivan Robertson, seven more than Stephen Callaghan and Peter Roles.

Lynne Miller was in a league of her own in a medal for Cheadle ladies posting a super 64 to win by eight shots from Gail Crowley and Louise Wildgoose.

The Captain’s competitio­n at Cheadle was won by Steve Owen with 39 points from Paul Toole 38 and Tony Doyle, Zack Gray and Gary Whadcock, all 37.

A midweek medal at Disley was won by Andrew Webb with 67, one less than Sam Potter.

Anthony Jacobs was a clear winner of the Charity Shield at Disley posting 44 points, four more than Nathan Singleton.

Disley ladies played for the Norma Ellis Trophy and in a close contest Ann McCormick won with 75, one less than Debbie Eyre, Annastasia Codd and Jean Blackie.

Gatley’s men played round one of the Jubilee Trophy and Chris Coffey set a hot pace with 65, four less than Chris Whitehead.

In round two Scott Keelan led in with 68, two less than Michael Coffey and Tony Anderson.

Heaton Moor’s men were busy over two rounds for the Chevalier Trophy and in round one the pace was set by Anthony Stennett with 67 from Philip Massey and Alan Mottershea­d, both 68.

In round two Michael Rothwell was the star with 67 from Paul Hesford 68 and five players on 69.

One of these was

Michael Hudson-Davies and it combined with his round one score of 69 from a winning score of 138, three less than Steve Prinn, Alan Mottershea­d and Anthony Stennett.

Moor’s ladies played for the Rose Bowl and Jeanette Quinn was the proud winner with 69 from Judy Collins 70 and Jacqueline Bickley and Margaret Arnison, both 74.

A singles Stableford for Mellor and Townscliff­e ladies had Paula Ryan on top with 35 points, two more than Lesley Howarth and Lesley Parkinson.

Medal action for M and T’s men saw a tight finish in division one with Jay Bebbington winning a cpo on 67 from Matthew Moores and Roger Brooke.

Scott Jackson cruised to victory in division two with 64, five less than Anthony Woodford.

The first round of the Shaw Marsh medal at New Mills was won by Alex Mackenzie with 65 from Joe Stockton 66 and Josh Westmerlan­d, Jack Marshall and Steve Kirkham, all 67.

The George Scott Trophy at New Mills had Steven Parr in form control with 42 points from Robert Holden 37 and Ian Bowers, Alan Woolley and John Tennant, all 36.

A medal for New Mills ladies was won by MarieAnne McGibbon with 75 from Maureen Harrison 76 and Jane Howard 77.

New Mills ladies also played for the Wilson Bowl and Ann Brown posted an impressive 65 to finish ahead of Alison Wright 67, who had the lowest gross of 78, and Joyce Bennett 72.

President’s Day at Romiley was won by Gary Wilde with 68 from Oliver Shore 69 and Allan Martin, Martin Arrowsmith and Bradley Snape, all 70.

The Junior McRoberts Cup at Romiley was won by Ashton Baxter with 39 points, two more than Aaron Bardsley.

A Senior Mixed Team Open at Romiley was won by P and A Carter and A and C Seed with 79 points from D Booth, S Clarke, J and J Loughlin 76 and S and P haq, Kay Patrick and A Kiami 71.

Bramhall Ladies were out in force for their reschedule­d Challenge Bowl Final. This prestigiou­s competitio­n had been played during both

World Wars and Bramhall Lady Captain, Maria Spencer was determined that Coronaviru­s was not going to halt it this year.

The Stableford Competitio­n is played by ladies who have qualified throughout the year and is played over 36 holes so is a test of not only golf, but stamina and mental determinat­ion.

Three players racked up a score of 68 after two rounds so there was a three-way play-off.

Vicky Clewley, Jean Hindmoor and Helen Phillips played the first and the fourth holes and the outright winner was Vicky Clewley.

The Morning Winner was Jean Hindmoor and the afternoon winner was Pat Marriott. Another lady worthy of a mention, having played 36 holes was Pat Newall who plays off 27 and came in mid-table and was celebratin­g her 82nd birthday the day after. The ladies celebrated a great day with a Lasagne supper in the Marquee and a few glasses of wine!
