Joint inquiry is launched into industrial estate fire
POLICE and fire crews will carry out a joint investigation into the cause of a fire at a Stockport industrial estate.
Nine fire engines raced to the single-storey industrial unit at the Whitehill Industrial Estate, on Hibbert Street, Reddish, on the evening of Tuesday, February 2.
Smoke could be seen billowing out from the building when the fire broke out just before 6.40pm.
Residents were asked to keep their windows and doors closed.
Firefighters used an aerial appliance to tackle the flames and the Technical Response Unit and Command Support Unit used breathing apparatus to direct jets to fight the fire.
By around 9.30pm the fire – which involved a large quantity of paper and card – was under control.
However firefighters remained at the scene overnight to ensure it was fully extinguished. Nobody was injured.
Greater Manchester Police say officers attended and found the fire affecting a number of units.
A joint investigation will be carried out with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) to establish the cause of the fire.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.
A spokesperson for GMFRS said on Wednesday: “At around 5.55pm on Tuesday, 2 February, firefighters were called to the scene of a fire at Whitehill Industrial Estate, in Stockport.
“Eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester, the Command Support Unit, the Hydraulic Platform and the Technical Response Unit quickly attended the scene.
“The fire involved the mezzanine level of a single-storey commercial industrial unit. Fire crews used jets, breathing apparatus, a hose reel and other specialist equipment to tackle the fire. Firefighters remain at the scene dampening down flames.”
