Kandy hoping for sweet success

-

A STOCKPORT student will become the youngest entrant in this year’s Miss Drag UK competition.

Luke Hill, otherwise known as alter-ego Kandy Floss, is a well-known face having been part of the Macclesfield’s Pride event and a member of transgender support group Transcend.

The 16-year-old will now do battle with around 15 other contestants in the national pageant on March 27.

There will be three rounds - a lip-syncing performance, avant garde fashion and evening wear - for which Luke has made his own outfits.

In one he will wear a dress which has had 12,000 crystals sewed onto each arm sleeve.

Luke said: “It has been a lengthy process as I have done everything head to toe myself, but I feel good and ready for the competition.

”I feel at a high point with what I am doing, to win would be great but the main thing is to show I can do it.

”I always dressed up as a child and was into make-up and when I saw RuPaul’s Drag Race I thought, ‘I could do that.’ I looked awful but had confidence so kept going.”

The competition takes place in Maidstone, Kent, and all contestants must take Covid tests and adhere to strict coronavirus rules.

Luke, who is a student at Stockport College and lives in Chapel-en-leFrith, in the High Peak, has also performed at Porters at the Prince of Wales, in Macclesfield.

In preparation for the competition he has spent many hours studying the history of fashion and drag performance.

Mum Sarah Hill said: “I am always inspired by Luke’s creativity and passion for what he does and hope he brings home the crown.

”He is an amazing young man.”
