AMASKED thug who battered a shop worker with a meat cleaver has been jailed for more than six years.

Peter Logan, from Stockport, launched the violent attack on a newsagent shop worker on November 15 last year.

The worker first noticed Logan - who had his face covered - tampering with a parked vehicle outside the back of the shop.

The victim went to challenge him but Logan then launched forward, as two other men - whose faces were also covered approached him from behind.

The worker ran back inside the shop and tried to push the door closed but was repeatedly hit over the head with a meat cleaver.

As he was pushed against a wall, he noticed Logan, 33, wielding the weapon.

The court then heard how the victim was dragged to the shop floor while money was taken from the tills and alcohol and cigarettes were stolen from the shelves.

He was also forced to open the shop safe and hand over the money inside, as well as his wallet and house keys.

Before Logan made off in a car, the victim was threatened and told that it was known where he lived.

The shop worker had to be taken to hospital after the attack.

He required stitches to four cuts on the back of his head.

Last Wednesday Logan, of Gray Close, Stockport, was sentenced to six years and 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to robbery and assault.

Detective Constable Paul Garner, of GMP’s Stockport division, said: “This was a violent and frightening attack on a man at his work place who was just simply trying to do his job.

“These crimes not only leave physical scars for victims, but emotional ones too.

“I would therefore like to thank the victim for their corporation and bravery throughout the investigation, as well as those who came forward with information.

“Although our investigation remains ongoing to bring all those responsible to justice, I am pleased that Logan has today been sentenced for his particularly violent and gruesome actions.

“I hope that the sentencing today demonstrates GMP’s commitment to bringing those who put their greed before that of the safety of innocent members of the public, to justice.”
