THREE illustrated maps of Brinnington are to be created with the aim of encouraging residents to explore their local area.

The first map has already been released and showcases the green space that Brinnington has to offer.

A second map will highlight local walking routes and physical activity options to help keep the community moving while the third will cover some fascinating historical landmarks.

The maps were created by Life Leisure as part of their Local Pilot, which forms part of the Stockport Moving Together physical activity recovery programme in response to Covid, and they hope that the maps will encourage residents to explore the local area once lockdown ends.

Ross McGuigan, active communities manager at Life Leisure, said: “The aim is to show the area to local residents and to a much wider audience.

“But it’s to create positive conversation and to encourage people to talk about Brinnington positively.

“The maps could be used for anything, whether it’s for walks, exploring and more.

“We want people to be creative with using them and sharing them with us.

“The map highlights local landmarks to help guide residents and visitors alike on what they can see and do in the community and more importantly, this is the first of three maps to be released.”

It features a number of local buildings and places, surrounded by Reddish Vale park, highlighting the spaces and places to visit.

Life Leisure created a That Counts in Brinnington Forum, which, with input from local people and organisations such as Stockport Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Brinnington Big Local formed the initial idea of the maps.

Ross added that he hoped the maps would encourage local residents to use the maps with families, friends or colleagues, especially once restrictions are lifted so they can explore more of Brinnington and the surrounding area safely.

“We want to emphasise the importance of working with local residents and their knowledge and expertise has been key to creating the maps,” he said.

“We would like to thank all those involved and we hope to continue to positively work alongside more local people in the future.”

He also added that Life Leisure hoped to distribute hard copies of the maps as well as leaflets advertising their release.
