Robber attacks woman, 74, in car snatch bid

But neighbours force him to flee

A74-YEAR-OLD pensioner was knocked to the floor as car thieves tried to take her Mercedes.

The victim was saved after neighbours ran out to help and her attacker fled.

The pensioner, although shaken, was not hurt during the incident, said police, who are treating the incident as a robbery.

The woman was driving through Heaton Moor on Monday when her vehicle was struck by another car on Cranleigh Avenue.

As she got out to speak to the male passenger she was knocked to the ground and the keys were snatched from her grasp.

Neighbours who were alerted to the disturbanc­e ran out of their homes and ‘deterred the male’, according to police.

The woman appeared to have been targeted by a ruse as she was driving through Heaton Moor in Stockport on Monday.

Her vehicle was struck by another car on Cranleigh Avenue at about 5.40pm, according to police. The woman got out of her vehicle and spoke to the male passenger of the other car only for him to then attempt to snatch her car keys.

The victim ‘fended off the male’ but she was knocked to the ground and the keys were snatched from her grasp, say officers.

The man then got into the woman’s car and tried to drive it away.

Neighbours who were alerted to the disturbanc­e ran out of their homes and ‘deterred the male,’ according to police.

The man returned to the car in which he and an accomplice arrived and drove off towards Mauldeth Road.

Police have so far made no arrests and are treating the incident as a robbery.

Greater Manchester Police posted details of the ‘awful attack’ on its Stockport Facebook page, including an image of a person they are seeking.

Police Constable Jack Gregory, of GMP’s Stockport Division, said: “This was an awful attack on a lady going about her daily business.

“The victim was targeted by these males and subjected to an assault in an attempt to take her car.”
