CARE home residents got into the Mexican spirit to celebrate Cinco de Mayo last week.

Residents at Marple Dale care home in Stockport, celebrated the national holiday which recognises freedom and liberty in Mexico.

Celebrated on May 5, the day marks the date in 1862 when President Benito Juarez sent troops to face the invading French army who were marching towards Mexico City.

In Mexico the day is celebrated with parades, fireworks and battle reenactments.

However, the residents at Marple Dale watched videos of parades and celebrations in Mexico, travelled virtually to different historic sites in Mexico, and had a Mexican quiz.

They also had a Mexican themed party which included Mariachi music and a buffet of traditional Mexican food such as tacos, burritos, enchiladas and mole poblano, a delicious rich sauce made of chillies and chocolate.

One resident, Ray, said: “It is so wonderful to be able to mark occasions like this and to remember the history behind the date.

“I really enjoyed watching the celebrations in Mexico and the Mexican food was amazing provided by our home’s chef.”

Marple Dale general manager Michelle Timperley said the home tries to mark cultural events.

She said: “We celebrate all cultures and religions and we try to mark as many cultural events as possible.

“Cinco de Mayo is a fantastic celebration and a great excuse for a party.

“We all had so much fun decorating the home with Mexican flags and decorations and dancing to the Mariachi music.”
