All welcome as Woodley toast 50th

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

ONE of Stockport’s most famous bowling clubs will celebrate turning 50 years old this season.

Woodley Sports on Lambeth Grove is an integral cog in the local bowls community.

The club is home to arguably the most famous sweep in the town, The Woodley Classic.

Sadly this season’s restrictions meant the event could not take place this time around. The club, though, has not rested on its laurels and is running a huge open day on Sunday 30th May from 11am.

The open day will be run in conjunction with the Bowls England “Big Bowls weekend” which aims to also promote the sport.

The club would like to invite anybody interested in the game young or old down to try bowling and look at the facilities and green.

Anybody interested can book a time slot with Chris Moffett on 07717 444970 or email Christopher.moffett@ hotmail.com for more information.

You can also just turn up on the day if you prefer the postcode for the green for Sat Nav users is SK6 1QX.

If all that is not enough the club is still running bowls coaching lessons every Saturday between 10am and Midday.

The S and D league continued on Tuesday evening and so did Poynton Sports fantastic start to the season.

The short trip to Great Moor yielded five winners and the aggregate to keep them on top of the table.

Favourites Houldsworth finally got their campaign started with five winners and the aggregate away at George and Dragon.

Debutant Alan Manuel won the kitty for the men from Reddish securing a 21-9 winning card.

In Hyde Grapes Hotel put paid to Hadfield’s good start securing a 10-4.5 home victory on a green they very rarely lose on.

The evergreen Dave Walker (21-7) and Greater Manchester county man Mike Gee (21-8) did the most damage to the visitors.

Victoria suffered a nightmare night away at Whaley Bridge on a nice surface.

Mark Bennett found the bowls to become the Offerton sides only winner on a gloomy night for the Webb Lane men.

To be fair to Victoria many of the away players did score double figures but the hosts proved to be just too strong.

Elsewhere across the town the much depleted Stockport Parks league got underway in both the divisions.

Cheshire’s prestigious Brunner Cup draw was also announced this week and is as followsMatches to be played 6 at home 6 away- Round 1 Sat 22nd MayPoynton Sports V Rudheath, Pack Horse V West Kirby Vics, Victory Hall V Wharton Cons, Parkside V Sale XL, Mersey Valley V Winnington Park, Owley Wood V Shavington, Middlewich V Wharton Rec- Round 2 ByesCastle Sports, Lloyds, LMRCA, Crown Hotel, Davenham Rec, Comberbach, Houldsworth WMC, Crosstown, Frodsham Red Lion.
