Lauren lauds charity effort

MELLOR and Townscliff­e Golf Club’s young star Lauren Jones was delighted with the support she received and the success of her charity golf day supporting The Christie Charity.

Lauren began her golf at M and T at the age of six and progressed with success at her club and becoming a regular player for Cheshire Ladies as well as being the Cheshire Girls Captain.

She has always had an ambition to follow a career in golf with top results at Myerscough College seeing her get a degree in Golf Management.

She had a big setback in 2018 when she found that she had skin melanoma in her neck and underwent two operations and she is very grateful to the help given to her by The Christie and Stepping Hill hospital during and after two operations in helping her overcome this.

She decided to organise a golf day at her club to raise funds for The Christie.

Lauren said: “Despite the problems posed by Covid we got a magnificen­t turn-out of 48 teams of four on the day and to date have raised £10.239.65.

“It was a great day for myself and my family and our lovely golf club with players coming from far and wide to support the day.

“I want to thank my mum for helping me organise the event, Carl Cross (M and T profession­al), my dad, Vicky Parry (Lady Captain), and the Mellor team with volunteers at the half way house for helping throughout the day.

“The top teams were first with 98 points - M. Tattersall, P.High, D. Carey, L. Allsop and second with 97 points - Scott Jackson, Kim Jackson, Vicky Parry (Lady Captain), Chris Alexander.

“I want to say thanks for everyone who played, volunteere­d and donated and I’m glad we’ve raised so much money for a great local charity.”

Bramhall ladies were busy in two competitio­ns with a medal won by Annabel Proffitt with 70 from Chie Kayaba and Sylvia Howe won the 9-hole competitio­n with 23 points.

It was close in a singles Stableford with a cpo on 40 points won by club legend Kath Ince from Jan Johnson and Alison Thornley.

A medal for Bramhall’s men had Jon Pacey posting an impressive 65 to win by two shots from Marcus Green and John Allenby.

A medal for Cheadle’s men had Antony Rowley on top with 62 fone less than Colin May and John Naylor.

The ‘major’ Ben Hunstone Millenium Trophy at Disley had the hot pair of A Quinn-Williams and J Potter psoting 45 points. one more than A Sweeney and S Cunningham and E Rowbottom and S Bradley.

Disley ladies were also in ‘major’ action playing for the Mildred Manning Trophy and Leigh Duffy was first past the post with 72 from Deborah Potts and Chris Jones, both 73.

A Wednesday Stableford at Gatley saw the familiar name of Graham Fletcher in control with 30 points, three more than Scott Keelan and Mark Coffey.

It was close at Heaton Moor in the second Captain’s qualifying medal with Mark Roberts showing his class with 66, one less than Steve Prinn, Dan Doohan, Michael Brennan and Anthony Bates.

It was also tight in a Moor ladies medal with Diane Wilson first past the post after a cpo on 71 with Carole Wheeler closely followed by Tina Benson and Helen Leggatt, both 72.

Stuart McGrath was in a league of his own in a Sunday Stableford at New Mills with his big haul of 43 points seeing him four clear of Jared Massey and Duncan Wilson.

It was tougher in the midweek Stableford with Paul Holland in top spot with 36 points, two more than Aaron Lee.

A Stableford for New Mills ladies had Jenny Forshaw first past the post with 37 points, one more than Katherine Lindsay and Elizabeth Milne.

The 9-hole winner was Angela Adamson with 16.

Romiley ladies were in par mode as they played for the Nellie Oldham prize and it needed a cpo on +2 to see Diane Houghton home from Carolyn Brinsley and Sandra Hayes.

The monthly medal for Romiley’s men had the four divisions led in by Mike Murray 69, Daniel Pearson 65, Adrian Nuttall 68 and Steven Hayes after a cpo on 65 with Carl Mellor.

The Manchester Alliance finished its severely truncated winter season in style with President Ian Brooks hosting a great day at the beautiful Turton Golf Club which gives magnificen­t views over Greater Manchester and beyond.

After two horrendous days of weather a full field gave the thumbs up to the club for the great condition of the course and sunny weather!

It was the deciding day for the profession­al and amateur Order of Merit rankings and it was no great surprise that the long-standing leaders in both rankings stayed on top of their tables.

Davenport’s Jamie Howarth finished level on third spot with main rival Phil Archer (Poulton Park) in the individual pro section to clinch victory.

The final scores for the top three were Jamie 365, Phil 329 and Ian Ridgway 261.

Alliance stalwart Jimmy O’Reilly (Ellesmere) has won the amateur Order of Merit more times than he can remember and he eased home again with a final total of 55.5 from Mark Riley 43.5 and Steve Misell 40 to add another to his impressive list of Alliance successes.

The top individual pro was Craig Corrigan with 38 points, two more than Ian Ridgway (Disley) and Jamie and Phil tied with Grant Hamerton (Pike Fold) and Andy Palmer (Chorley) on 34 points.

In the pro am section Ian Ridgway had a fine partner in Dave Bradbury who helped him to 44 points to finish a point ahead of Craig Corrigan and Mark Riley (Leigh) and four points further back were Scott Jackson and Steve Misell (Disley), Phil Archer and Anton Johnson (Warrington) and Mark Hancock and Mike Holland (Stand).

Stamford’s Paul Traynor and Richard Margrave were clear winners in the am am section with 41 points, two more than John Kilner and Tom Baker (Marriott Worsley Park) who won a cpo from Sale husband and wife pair Mobi and Cath Rawthore.

Jamie Howarth completed a good day by winning the nearest the pin prize.

The Alliance officials have been very busy throughout Covid to set up the next winter season and will complete their programme soon and the new Captain will be Chris Lee (Mellor and Townscliff­e GC).
