Hit-and-run victim’s mother urges driver to come forward

-

THE mother of a young woman struck by a 4x4 car during a hit and run has called on the driver to hand themselves in.

The 23-year-old was crossing London Road, in Hazel Grove, when she was hit at around 10.40pm on Saturday night.

The student had spent the week in her room preparing for a university exam she was due to sit on Monday.

She had allowed herself one evening off and as she walked along London Road with her boyfriend and his family, she was struck by a 4x4 vehicle outside the Boteega nightclub.

The driver did not remain at the scene.

Speaking after a worrying night at Manchester Royal Infirmary, her mum said: “I can live with it if they come forward today.

“They have left a young girl that could have been dead for all they knew.

“We could have been getting the news that our beautiful daughter was taken from us. How can someone do that?”

The student had been working a part-time job as well as studying for her final exams.

She took a break on Saturday and had headed into Hazel Grove for a drink. She was walking ‘slightly ahead’ when she was hit, her mum says.

“During the last week I don’t think she came out of her room because she’s got this massive exam,” she said. “She’s really in the thick of it.

“She was with her boyfriend and his family for a barbecue in the afternoon and they had gone for a drink and were walking along.

“She stepped slightly ahead and that’s when she was hit. I’m really struggling to piece together any more than that.”

The mum says her daughter’s collarbone is broken, but she does not appear to have any lifechanging injuries.

She says: “For two hours last night we didn’t know what was happening.

“I’m so thankful that I can say she’s pulled through.

“We got the phone call from the police at 11.05pm. At first I thought it was her boyfriend playing a joke. It was quite shocking.

“She’s stable now, we can say that.”

Officers from Greater Manchester Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any available dashcam footage, or any information about the collision.

A large cordon was in place across part of London Road on Saturday night.

The main road was closed in both directions and specialist police officers from the serious collision unit were pictured at the scene.

A GMP spokesperson said: “A dark coloured 4x4 vehicle was travelling on London Road towards Hazel Grove when it collided with a pedestrian crossing the road outside the Boteega nightclub.

“The vehicle failed to stop. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

“The injuries are not thought to be lifethreatening or lifechanging. Enquiries are on-going and anyone with information or anyone with dash-cam footage is asked to get in touch.

“Witnesses can report online at www.gmp.police. uk or by using our LiveChat service online.
