THE strangest, longest most frustrating of seasons is over, one game early.

I hate the play-offs, if Sutton and Torquay had gone up as champions and runners up I wouldn’t have minded but the play-offs are just an arbitrary couple of games that have no true reflection of the work put in over the previous season.

Having said that County had a chance of promotion and the distinct possibility of playing their last ever non-league game at

Edgeley Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was great once again to have the faithful in the ground, the noise; the atmosphere was brilliant, sadly the effort from the support didn’t transpire onto the pitch.

Whether it was nerves or worry the team underperformed and sadly paid the ultimate price.

The starting lineup had Paddy Madden and Will Collar back in midfield alongside Ryan Croasdale and National League player of the season John Rooney which gave the home support a bit of a buzz and a genuine feel that this was our time. It has to be said that we had the majority of chances in front of goal Paddy had a glorious chance early on but his shot was sliced wide, MSH brought out a great save for the Pools stand in keeper.

However as time went on it became increasingly frustrating that nothing was going our way. There were a couple of contentious decisions from the referee, David Richardson has been in charge of us several times this season and guess what…..we haven’t won one!

How on earth Holohan wasn’t red carded for kicking Elliott Newby in the face is beyond me

especially when Ash Palmer was red carded at their ground earlier in the season when his boot only caught a player in the armpit? Then we had JJ. James win a throw in and then was assaulted (there’s no other word for it) in the dug-out…nothing given and no one could understand why. We were crying out for a strong referee and we got a wimp!

Back to the game, Ash slipped, Rhys Oates set off, shot from distance and scored. One chance, one shot, one goal, game over. We had chances late on, Richie Bennett and Alex Reid both came on and had a genuine chance to score but as so often this season, chances were fluffed and County paid the price. I’m sure we’ll see some new faces brought in over the next few weeks and a few players leave the club, as for me I’ll be back for pre-season and I hope to see you all there too.

2021-22 will be our season. Come on County.
