Junior section is thriving at Avro

AVRO Golf Club, situated on the borders of Stockport and Macclesfie­ld, is again justifiabl­y proud of another great season for their thriving junior section despite Covid restrictio­ns.

Junior organiser Iain Carroll said: “The Junior section at Avro has grown to include 23 members in 2021. New members continue to join on a regular basis mostly through recommenda­tion from existing members and their parents.

“We’re hoping for another successful year of recruitmen­t with a particular focus on recruiting more girl members.

“The juniors meet every Saturday afternoon throughout the year only stopping for a short break over Christmas.

“If you are interested in coming along and having a go then please contract either Iain or Tony. The details are on our website.

“Once Covid restrictio­ns were lifted re opening the clubhouse we were able to hold our junior prize presentati­on with a full attendance of juniors and parents.

“It was announced that the Junior Captain for 2021 will be Beth Tweedale and the Vice Captain will be Matthew Crawford and they were presented with their badges and caps by outgoing Junior Captain Ewan Carroll.

“The prize winners were: Ewan Carroll – Most Improved Trophy, Cameron Farrer – Captains 9 Hole Trophy, George Searl – Vulcan Trophy, Harry Williams – Lady Captains Trophy, Oliver Pickering – Presidents Cup, Alex Tubb Captain’s Trophy.

Avro’s men played for the Greenall Whitley medal and in a close contest Steve Yule came out on top with 68, one less than Peter Walker and Paul Pugh.

A Midweek Stableford at Avro had Neil Flood in charge with 37 points from Ken Fairfield, Chris Robinson and Michael McDonagh, all 35.

Bramhall ladies played the Challeneg Bowl Final over 36 holes and winning with 67 points was Ali Hicks from Annabel Proffitt 65.

A Greensome for Bramhall ladies was won by Sue Carter and Liz Hitch with 31 points, one more than Maggie Beadle and Sandra Smith.

The Vets Cup for Bramhall’s men was won by Richard Sym with 71 one less than Joe Kirwan who won a cpo from three other players.

A singles Stableford for Bramhall’s men was led in by Martin Seabrook with 42 points from James Cash 40.

Hazel Grove’s men played for the Jubilee Cup and in division one Thomas Whitehurst posted 67, one less than Fraser Macleod and David Ashworth.

Tracey Slater won division two with 67 and in division three James Johnson was the star of the day with a stunning 62.

Grove’s ladies played their MDLGA Bunty Booth qualifier and Lynda Daly will represent the club in 2022 after winning a cpo on 39 points with Glynis Jones.

A ladies medal at Houldswort­h had Elizabeth Fallows first past the post with 70 from Patricia Bennett 73 and Elaine Shaw 74.

Medal action for Houldswort­h’s men had David Thomson top of the shop with 63 from Daniel Ward 65 and Liam Howard 66.

The June medal at Marple had the three divisions topped by Simon Jeffs 65, Simon Tunnicliff­e 64 and Peter Irwin 67.

Midweek Stableford action at Marple had Ray McPhee winning division one with 38 points and in division two Adrian Thomas cruised home with 40 points.

Marple ladies played the Edith Parrott Stableford and it was won by Carolyn Souter with 40 points, one more than Sheila Leighand Joan Miller won the 9-hole competitio­n with 12.

A Wednesday Stableford at Reddish Vale had division one won by Chris Connolly with a great haul of 45 points, four more than Daniel Myers.

It was closer in division two with Stuart Flint first past the post with 68, one less than Gary Hughes and Derek Simpkins and in division three Michael Thompson was a clear winner with a neat 65.

Midweek Stableford action at Stockport saw Peter McSorley on top with 40 points from Paul Atkinson 39 and Robbie Smith 37.

A ladies ‘Stand Alone Stableford at Stockport was won by Catherine Smith after a cpo on 27 points with Jayne Carey.

Prestbury Golf Club is celebratin­g its delayed Centenary in 2021 and was delighted to be placed recently in the top 100 courses in the country.

It provided a fantastic venue for the 2021 County Girls Championsh­ip with a challengin­g and pristine course with the players having to endure strong winds and rain in the later stages of the competitio­n.

Cheshire Girls Captain Siobhan Grayson (Ringway GC) set the competitio­n off with an immaculate drive from the first tee and some great talent then enjoyed an excellent competitio­n

Imogen Williamson (Delamere Forest) was one of the youngest-ever winners of the championsh­ip aged 12 in 2019 at Caldy and Covid meant that was no championsh­ip in 2020.

Now playing off one handicap Imogen posted gross 79 to retain the trophy from her nearest challenger Freya Jackson (Lymm).

The u16 Scratch Trophy (presented by Ruth Whitehead) was won by Milly Tighe (Ringway) with 85 leaving her clear of previous winner Josie Cowap (Crewe)

Taking the u14 Scratch Trophy (presented by Beryl Page) was Styal’s Isabella Taylor-Stokes with 83 from Jamie Hand (Crewe).

Winning the Handicap Trophy (presented by the late Elizabeth Pook) was Astbury’s Eryn Gravett 76 from Imogen Marsland (Lymm) 80.

In the 9-hole Stableford for young golfers Naomi Willans (Astbury) was a clear winner with a great haul of 24 points leaving her well clear of Isabelle Saunders (Brombrough).

County Captain Frances Gell (Bramhall) gave deserving thanks to all at Prestbury Golf Club for their help and providing great quality both on and off the course, to all of the players for their efforts on the course and to the hard-working county officials in making this a top class competitio­n.
