Right time to honour club legend Danny
IT really is great to see the launch announcement for the Danny Bergara Statue Appeal in this edition of the Stockport Express (back page).
At last, the County family and the world will now get the opportunity to honour the memory of ‘The Man From Uruguay’ a man far larger than life and much loved by generations of County fans who still sing his name at games.
A joint initiative by Stockport County Supporters Cooperative and Help the Hatters has established the appeal which aims to raise £50,000, via Just Giving, to enable the commissioning of a statue of Danny by top sculptor Hannah Stewart, which the Club have kindly agreed to site at an appropriate place at Edgeley Park. We think that this appeal will strike a chord with County supporters and the wider football community.
Danny transformed County in his time as our manager, bringing a new type of football to us and a team of players who banished the ‘no hopers’ tag with a brand of football that saw us in Wembley finals on four occasions. He was the first manager born outside the UK to lead an English football team out at the national stadium, bringing real pride back to the town by guiding County to promotion along the way, and we feel now, more than 25 years after Danny left the Club, is the right time to do something positive to honour his memory!
To start the appeal off the Supporters Cooperative and Help the Hatters have agreed to donate £2000 each to the appeal, and the Cooperative will be adding the proceeds from this years Stockport Hatters Half Marathon to the appeal along with income from other fund raisers along the way.
We hope you will support the appeal which you can do here:- https:// www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/ dannybergara
