Squad told ‘work to do’ in EFL push

- SAM BYRNE

DIRECTOR of Football Simon Wilson had a clear message for the County squad this week after the club confirmed their retained list for the 2021/22 campaign - telling the club’s contracted players that “we have work to do”, as The Hatters again seek to secure a return to the EFL.

Following the heartbreak of a play-off semifinal defeat to Hartlepool - who secured promotion to the Football League this week with a dramatic shootout win over Torquay United – The Hatters moved quickly to confirm who would remain on the books for the coming season, and who has departed Edgeley Park.

Two popular figures in Adam Thomas and Nyal Bell are the highest-profile names to be released, with both playing a key role in the club’s National League North title success in 2019.

Thomas made over 150 appearances for the club since joining back in 2016, whilst Bell made just shy of 100 appearances across three seasons.

Attacking midfielder Harvey Gilmour was also let go following a season in which the former Tranmere Rovers man struggled for game time, whilst youngsters Adam Owen, Finley Stanyer, Jordan Downing, Alex Curran, Max Greenhalgh and Jack Hopkins were all released.

Squad goalkeepers Josh Barnes and Ross Fitzsimons have also both left the club, after making just one competitive appearance between the pair during the 2020/21 campaign.

Thomas and Curran both joined National League North outfit Curzon Ashton following their release from Edgeley Park.

From the club’s official retained list, it is believed that a number may still leave County over the coming weeks and months, with squad players such as Jamie Stott, Richie Bennett and Jordan Williams struggling for minutes throughout the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, loanees Harry Cardwell and Tom Walker returned to parent clubs Chorley and Harrogate respectively.

Cardwell scored four goals and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award during his time at the club, although the Scottish forward’s form dipped towards the end of the campaign - with County also reportedly put off by Chorley’s demand of over £100k for Cardwell’s services on a permanent basis.

“I’d like to thank all the players who have been part of our season for their contributions and commitment. As always, it has been a season full of twists and turns, highs and lows, and we mustn’t ever forget that players are at the front line of that and feel it more than most,” said Director of Football Wilson.

“Whether they have been in the team, out of the team; fit or injured, they have all played their part, driven each other, and collectively delivered a season that although didn’t achieve what we all dreamt about, gave us hope, and laid foundations for success in the future. On behalf of everyone at the club, we appreciate it.

“For those that are leaving the club, may we wish you the best for your next football adventure, wherever that takes you.

“For those who are under contract and back in July, rest up, take stock, and lets go again. We have work to do.”
