Fire crews rescue trapped deer from river
A DEER was rescued from the River Goyt in Stockport firefighters before being returned to a nearby country park.
The small deer was spotted in the stretch of the river off New Bridge Lane close to the town centre on Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews were dispatched, and with the help of officers from the RSPCA, they began the task of safely retrieving it from the water.
Specialist water incident response firefighters used ladders and ropes to reach it and bring it to safely to the river bank in an hour-long operation.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have now confirmed the animal was safely rescued and returned it to the nearby Reddish Vale Country Park.
A spokesperson for GMFRS said “Just after 12:45pm on Sunday 27th June, firefighters were called to rescue a deer from a river near New Bridge Lane, Stockport.
“Two fire engines from Stockport and Whitehill fire stations, the Water Incident Unit from Eccles, and the Technical Rescue Unit from Leigh arrived quickly at the scene.
“Working with colleagues from RSPCA, specialist water incident responders brought the deer to safety using ladders and rope access equipment. RSPCA later safely relocated the deer at Reddish Vale Country Park. Crews were in attendance for around one hour.”
A tweet about the incident from the fire service’s official Twitter account was greeted by replies thanking and congratulating crews for their efforts.
