‘Idiot driver’ seen at wheel ‘holding coffee and phone’

- SOPHIE NORRIS

THIS is the terrifying moment an ‘idiot driver’ was spotted swerving across a residential street in Gatley almost hitting a car - apparently while using her phone AND holding a cup of coffee.

Rob Spurrett, from Tameside, was driving to a job in Gatley last Wednesday morning when he spotted the female Fiat 500 driver zig-zagging along the road towards him as if she ‘didn’t even notice him.’ The dadof-two watched in amazement as she then whizzed around a corner with what appeared to be a white mug in her hand appearing to enjoy her morning coffee.

The engineer claims he followed her for more than a minute as she narrowly avoided mounting the kerb and hitting a silver car on the other side of the road close to a nursery. Stunned

Rob, 45, has shared the footage captured at 10.45am as he was shocked by the dangerous driving - and said he feared someone could have been killed.

Rob, from Stalybridge, said: “When I realised she had a brew in her hand, I was shocked.

“She wasn’t concentrating on her driving, I could see her looking down. I’m guessing it was at a mobile phone, with a brew in her hand.

“She couldn’t control the car, you can see. I don’t think she actually knows how to drive really, because she should have given way to one vehicle, but decided to go.

“She nearly ran into the kerb on the left-hand side, then she was just so close to the car on the right-hand side of the road. I thought she was going to hit it but she must have just spotted it at the last minute.

“It makes you lose your faith in humanity being on the road.”

Rob spotted the ‘oblivious’ driver veering across both lanes just after the morning rush hour, even appearing to miss a car heading towards her when she was supposed to give way.

Rob said: “She was absolutely oblivious, it’s not great. If it was a kid on the road, they’d have been dead. It’s a good thing no one else was around as there’s more chance of them being hurt.

“It’s a common thing now, people looking at their mobile phones and not concentrating on their actual driving.”
