Man, 27, fights for life after hit and run

AMAN is fighting for his life in hospital after a hit-andrun.

It happened on the A6 Wellington Road North near Heaton Chapel at around 11.15pm on Saturday.

The 27-year-old pedestrian was struck by a car, understood to be a Black A Class Mercedes, which then drove off heading southbound towards Stockport.

Emergency services raced to the scene.

The man, who had suffered “very serious” head injuries, was rushed to hospital.

He remains in a critical condition Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said on Sunday.

A police cordon remained in place, near the junction with Heaton Moor Road, into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Eyewitness at the scene said officers could be seen speaking to the driver of a bus said to have been nearby at the time, in order to try and secure CCTV footage.

Officers have now launched a direct appeal to the driver to come forward.

They are also asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who may any informatio­n or dashcam footage, to also get in touch.

Sergeant Neil Pennington, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigat­ion Unit, said: “A man is in hospital with very serious injuries.

“We need to find out exactly how this collision occurred and who was involved.

“We are working to identify the driver of the car that failed to stop.

“However, we do advise the person driving that car to make contact with police so we can properly ascertain the circumstan­ces of this serious incident.

“We are also asking for anyone who may have seen the incident or anyone who has informatio­n or dashcam footage, particular­ly any sightings of a black Mercedes A Class driving dangerousl­y in the area prior to the collision, to contact police.”
