ASTOCKPORT town centre pub changed its name in tribute to England’s efforts in the European Championships.

The Chestergate, in Mersey Square, changed its name to The Southgate as a show of support to the England boss and his players ahead of the Three Lions match against Italy.

The pub’s old sign was replaced by a new one featuring an image of Gareth Southgate and a St. George’s flag.

Before the match pub manager Lisa Mills said: “Seeing everyone celebrate together has been amazing. England’s success has been the boost everyone’s needed.

“The atmosphere on match days is unbelievable.”

Chris Tulloch, managing director of Blind Tiger Inns which owns the pub, added: “In amongst all the hard work that goes into running the pubs, we like to have a bit of fun here at Blind Tiger.

“Our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a fun but safe environment for our customers to enjoy the Euros.

“Gareth Southgate’s success with his team has brought the nation together, so it’s only right that we provide The Southgate pub for people to come together and watch England.”

The name change is just the latest example of Euros fever that took hold in Stockport before England’s heart-breaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy.

A number of street signs around the town were changed to honour the England team.

Aldersgate Road, in Heaviley, was transformed into Southgate Road as a nod to the England manager, while Edgeley Fold was doctored in honour of Stockport’s own Phil Foden.

Aston Close leading to Pickmere Close, in Adswood, was transformed into Jordan Pickford Close.

And Rae Street in Edgeley became Rashford Street.

Meanwhile Mount Road, also in Edgeley, had been changed to Mason Mount Road.
