Marathon round was worth the tough toil

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

HEATON Moor Golf Club Captain Terry McHale enjoyed and endured playing a marathon of 72 holes of golf in one day at his club.

His aim was to raise £1,000 for his chosen charity of Prostate Cancer UK and he received great support from friends, family and club members to go well past his target and is expecting to raise over £1,500.

Terry said: “The day went very well with a timetable to work to which kept us from resting too long and seizing up.

“We started at 6.30am with 2 x 2balls, myself and fellow member Noel Holohan followed by Alex Kennedy (Son-in-Law to be), with his friend Joe Orton. They were also supporting PCUK.

“The club kitchen were kind enough to open early at 9.45 to provide breakfast

“At second tee time of 10.10, Noel was relieved by Alan Worswick (who stayed for the next three rounds) and Ken Lappin who stayed for one round, then at 6pm I was joined by Vice Captain Ahmed Gada for 9 holes despite him playing 18 holes earlier in the day.

“I was also joined by a long standing friend of mine, Jem Kime whose humour and hipflask got us through to the finish line at 9.30 in fast fading light.

“Many thanks to Peter Willoughby for keeping the bar open, collecting cash and getting sponsorship forms completed.

“I must thank AnneMarie and Helen for their help with social media promotion which helped enormously.

“For the statisticianswe covered 23.3 miles or 43,389 steps. We played from the white tees and the average round time was three hours 15 minutes. We didn’t hang about!

“With support and encouragement from fellow members, help from bar staff and kitchen and my wife who collected money, charged batteries and fed and watered in the evening, the day turned into great fun and very rewarding for this very worthwhile cause.”
