Man arrested after OAP is killed in motorway crash

A 71-YEAR-OLD woman died in a motorway collision involving two cars and a HGV, police have confirmed.

A man from Stockport was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said he was also held on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

He’s 41 but hasn’t been named.

Cheshire Police said the man was questioned and has now been released ‘under investigat­ion.’

Emergency services were called to the M6 in Cheshire after a Mercedes, a Kia and lorry were involved in a collision on the northbound carriagewa­y between junctions 17 and 18, Sandbach and Holmes Chapel, at 12.30am on Saturday - October 30.

Police have now confirmed that a 71-yearold woman from Burscough, west Lancashire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was a passenger in the Kia, said Cheshire Police in a statement, and hasn’t been named.

A 49-year-old woman from Lancashire was taken to hospital following the collision with what police described as serious injuries. No further details on her condition have been revealed by the force.

No further injuries were reported.

A spokespers­on for Cheshire Constabula­ry said: “At 12.30am on Saturday, October 30, police were called to a collision on the M6 northbound carriagewa­y between junction 17 to junction 18. The collision involved three vehicles - a Mercedes, a Kia and a HGV.

“A passenger in the Kia died at the scene.

“The family of the 71-year-old woman, from Burscough, has been informed and is being provided support by specialist officers.

“A 49-year-old woman from Lancashire sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“A 41-year-old man from Stockport was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing injury by dangerous driving and drug driving.

“He has been released under investigat­ion.”

Cheshire Fire and

Rescue Service confirmed four engines were sent out to the scene.

A spokespers­on said: “Crews extricated two passengers from a vehicle.

“The woman and man were handed to the care of paramedics.

“Air ambulance attended to a third person.”

The tragedy is the second fatal collision on the M6 between junctions 17 and 18 in recent months. A lorry driver - a man in his 60s - died in September when his vehicle collided with a railway bridge.
