Marathon man James tackles chilly challenge

-

A MAN is taking on a marathon in the Arctic Circle to raise muchneeded funds to support people living with sight and hearing loss across Stockport.

James Cram will be joining more than 600 participants taking on the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromso, Norway on June 18, 350km above the Arctic Circle.

He has already completed five of the six world marathon majors, and is aiming to complete a marathon on every continent.

The runner said: “I took up running on a big challenge basis nine years ago after my sister Charlotte unfortunately died suddenly from a pulmonary embolism.

“Charlotte was very good at running in her youth, and it seemed a good way to keep her memory and enjoyment moving forward.

“It’s allowed me to see the world while at the same time helping others along the way; both of which are equally important to me.”

James, a Senior Surveyor, chose to raise funds for local charity Walthew House, as the charity’s premises on Shaw Heath is on his usual running route.

He said: “I have run past Walthew House on nearly every run for the last four years and was always intrigued by what goes on inside.

“After finally walking in I was amazed by the centre itself, the amount of help and support it offers the people of Stockport, and the clear dedication and friendly support the staff give!”

The charity provides practical and emotional support to people with sight or hearing loss.

Around 300 people access one or more of the services each week, including a resource centre, social and activity groups, a help desk and informal advocacy support, and specialist sight loss counselling.

Kay Kelly, CEO at Walthew House, said: “We are incredibly grateful to James for taking on this challenge and raising funds for us – this might be the closest one of our t-shirts has been to the North Pole!

“We are also grateful to James’ employer, Legal and General, who have generously offered to match-fund the sponsorship money raised.

“As a registered charity we receive no contracted income, and we are reliant on fundraising.”

James has already raised £1,280 for the charity.
