Duo set for Brunner Cup ties

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

THE round of sixteen in Cheshire’s prestigious Brunner Cup takes place on Saturday 21st May. Two Stockport teams remain in the hunt as the competition starts to get serious.

Houldsworth WMC will be strong favourites when they take on LV side Mersey Valley looking for a quarter final slot. The match between the two sides will take place at Wilmslow Sports and Social Club which is located between the two clubs.

Houldsworth are going well currently top of the S and D League whilst Mersey Valley have just achieved promotion to the top division in the LV League.

Elsewhere Poynton Sports won a thrilling game in round one when they defeated Mid Cheshire opponents by just one chalk.

That result has booked the Sports a date with Northwich based side Rudheath with the venue yet to be decided by the Cheshire committee.

The final news of interest is that a Stockport venue will be hosting a mouthwatering Brunner Cup second round clash. The Crown Hotel will be the setting for Lloyds Hotel’s massive game against Sale Excelsior.

The outright favourites for the entire competition remain Castle Sports as the event starts to get extremely intriguing.

In the S and D League itself Houldsworth have already forged a 20 point lead for themselves at the top of the tree.

The chasing pack is lead by George and Dragon and New Mills currently who have both started brightly.

Towards the bottom of the table Great Moor, Houldsworth (2) and LMRCA already look like they are in a relegation dogfight. The second division has a familiar look with Woodley Sports looking a cutting above the opposition. The second promotion spot is close and Great Moor (2) have a massive game this week away at third placed Nursery (1). In division Three West Heaton, Grange and Romiley Arms have all come out of the blocks in fine form and have opened up a gap on the chasing sides.

The bottom division is lead by Grange (2) who have won three games from there opening four matches.
