Aintree Day proves a big hit at Heaton Moor

HEATON Moor Golf Club ladies have enjoyed the Ladies Aintree Day for six years and this year with over 70 lady playing members at the club they were delighted to see just over 100 ladies, suitably dressed for the occasion, supporting the ladies section and charities for Lady Captain Julie Stonehouse and Captain Ahmed Gada.

Julie’s charity is Samaritans Heaton Moor and Ahmed’s is Centre Point, a homeless young people’s charity.

The day raised £800 for the ladies section and the sale of raffle tickets for Easter Hampers £718 for the Captains’ charities.

Due thanks were given to Jeanette Butterfiel­d for selling the tickets, Alan Butterfiel­d and Pete Jordan

for organising the race betting and all of the ladies who helped set up the room. Kay Lee for arranging the flowers and setting up the prize hampers.

Moor ladies played the final of the Centenary Salver and in a thrilling finish it needed a cpo on 67 to see Diane Wilson into top spot from Margaret Judkins and Anne Marie Gilbert.

Moor’s men played for the Ken McKewan Trophy and Tim Humpage was a clear winner with 42 from John Hicks 39 and Liam Houghton 38.

The Moor medal for the Fred McKenzie Trophy was won by Ray Milne with 68 from Michael Briggs 69 and club legend Ken Lappin 69.

The Flight Sheds Trophy at Avro was won by Steve Yule with 40, three more than John Isherwood and

Chris Robinson.

Steve kept up his hot streak by romping to victory in a Midweek Stableford with a massive 44 points taking him well clear of Stephen Callaghan 37 and Ken Fairfield and Derek Ellershaw, both 36.

Avro ladies played the first round for the Rose Bowl and Nikki Hale set the early pace with 69 from Ruth Arthur 70 and Marion Worth 71 with the 9-hole winner being Doreen McGarrie with a fine haul of 22.

A singles Stableford for Cheadle ladies saw Jo Taylor top division one after a cpo on 40 with Sandy Cundy.

In division two Debbie Owens also led in, also with 40.

Cheadle’s men played the Seniors Handicap qualifier and Mike Westbrook won a cpo on 37 from Keith Miller.

A Midweek Stableford at Disley had Chris Jenkinson top of the pile with 39 from John Clamp 38 and Andrew Webb and Gary Gaskell, both 37.

Philip Barnes was in a league of his own in the Senior Shield at Disley posting a massive 47 to finish well clear of Paul Sturgess and Brendan Conboy, both 41.

Disley ladies played their monthly medal and Shanghai qualifier and Eleanor Cantello led in with 69 from Julie Coleman 70 and Sandra Commins and Ann McCormick, both 72.

Gatley’s monthly medal had division one topped by Lee Wells with 75, two less than Richard Road.

In division two Peter Stiles was first past the post with 68, two less than Michael Brennan junior.

A singles Stableford at

New Mills had Aidey Smith win a cpo on 34 to top division one from Shaun Sidebottom.and in division two Derren Walker took top spot with 41 from Stuart Dowell 40.

A Wednesday Stableford at New Mills was led in by Jack Sidebottom with 41, three more than Giles Wyatt and Mary Stanley.

Josephine Coull topped a New Mills ladies Stableford with 37 from Joyce Bennett 35 and Mary Blake 32.and the 9-hole winner was Pam Boffey with 21.

A medal for Romiley’s men was won by Anthony Cocks with 68 from Martin Jones 70 and Stephen Cleary and Andrew Walton, both 71.

The Bramhall Team Exchange for Romiley’s men saw the fab four of S Thompson, G Nuttall, C Leigh and N Clapham led in with 85.

Romiley ladies were in Stableford action with Sharon Dineen first past the post with 38 from Linda Moore 37 and Isobel Wright and Jill Woolstencr­oft, both 34.
