Parks plunders a ton as Greens lose

- CRICKET JOHN RICHARDS

HAWK Green hosted Barrow and on winning the toss skipper Josh Hampson elected to bat opening the innings with himself and Jack Needham facing the opening attack of Ryan Holloway and Joe Williams.

It was the latter who struck first when he had Needham trapped lbw for 6, 22-1.

New to the crease was in-form Elliot Young and he and Hampson were very confident and played a range of excellent strokes, taking the score to 111 before Young was caught Williams bowled Rick Mumford for 46.

Next to the crease was Ben Littler who batted very cautiously at first, adding 57 runs with skipper Hampson before the latter was adjudged lbw for an excellent 65, 158-3.

Dylan Heginbotham and Sam Messih unfortunately fell early for 7 and 0 respectively both to the bowling of Mumford, 171-5.

Peter Richards and Littler started to take the attack to the opposition before Richards, playing back to Gareth Hughes, was bowled by a grubber for 15, 210-6.

With one towering six Brad Holmes added 10 to the total and it was left to Ollie Whisker and Littler to take the final total to 244-7, the latter closing on an excellent 53 not out and Whisker 13 not out.

The Barrow response was led by Gareth Hughes and Jack Randle against the Greens opening attack of Jack Needham and Frazer Heginbotham.

Both batsmen dug in with Needham being the more aggressive of the two bowlers and it was not until Brad Holme was introduced into the attack that the Green had any success when he bowled Hughes for 23.

Barrow moved very steadily towards the target and yet again the Greens’ fielding was below par and enabled the Barrow batsmen to close down the run chase.

Jack Rundle was run out in a classic yes/no incident involving a runner for an excellent 65 and Elliot Young chipped in with his usual two wickets the first caught by Mark Richards and the second lbw.

The remainder of the game was all about the innings of Barrow’s South African batsman Matt Parks who plundered an unbeaten century including ten fours and six maximums, an innings that was a delight to watch and

Barrow passed the Greens total with two overs to spare.

The match ball sponsors were Littlewoods the butchers of Marple.

On Saturday, the Greens 2nd XI had a comfortable victory over Appleton scoring 182-5 with Tom Headridge top scoring with 58 and then they bowled the opposition out for 120.

Ex Green junior Luke Young led Hyde to a fine victory against Toft with a fine 106 not out.

Next week the Green are away to Maritime wickets pitched 12-00.
