Business plans for Crieff High

Strath pupils in for awards

- Lynn Duke

Crieff High School has beaten off stiff competition to represent Tayside at this year’s Young Enterprise Awards.

And now the excited pupils are hoping Strath residents will get behind them and vote to assure a place in the UK final in London.

The youngsters representing Cri e f f are up against 14 other entrepreneurial teams from across Scotland.

Celebrating its 21st year, the Young Enterprise Awards will welcome ‘companies’ developed by the students to the Glasgow City Hotel on June 15 for the Scottish final.

The awards, designed to celebrate and recognise excellence in businesses c r e a t ed by young people, aged 16- 18, are independently judged and require pupils to set up trade stands; submit a business report and deliver a business presentation.

More than 2000 students have taken part in this year’s Company Programme, creating more than 200 new businesses. Crieff High School’s company - Authentic Designs - has been set up by a mixture of fifth and six-year pupils.

They produced highquality contemporary, rustic and stylish home gifts to sell at local fairs and events over Christmas.

The team’s Hannah Graham explained: “We created products and showcased them at Dundee’s Wellgate, which is where we won.

“We had to submit a business report, products and a presentation. It is a bit like The Apprentice - you get interrogated about your business report and then you get a slot to present to all the judges.

“We also had to set up a stall and it is all about your look.

“This is the Scottish final now and if we get through to London there is the chance that we could go to New York.”

This is the first year that Crieff High has made it through to the Scottish finals.

Strathearn Community Campus head Christine Ross said: “We are hugely proud of them in what they have done.

“This is also a real tribute to their teacher - Sonia Graham - who tragically died very suddenly in January this year.

“This is the first time we have been through to the Scottish finals and we are encouraging everyone to get behind them by going online and voting.

“It’s the simplest thing to do once you are on the page - you just click on the team of your choice.”

Crieff High School is currently lying fifth in the rankings.
