100 YEARS AGO Defence of the realm

-

The Herald carried an interesting article referring to James Maxton, future MP and leading figure in the Red Clydeside era.

“At a meeting of Glasgow School Board on Thursday, the question was raised and discussed whether or not Mr James Maxton, teacher in Finnieston School, should be dismissed.

“Mr Maxton, who is Chairman of the Scottish Labour Party, is at present undergoing 12 months imprisonment for an offence under the Defence of the Realm Act. (Maxton had been prominent in the Clyde Workers’Committee organising strikes in the shipyards).

“Mr Cleland moved that Mr Maxton be dismissed. He said he had pleaded guilty to a very serious offence against the laws of this country and the Board did not think it desirable he should remain in their service.

“Mr Mitchell Quinn moved the teacher be asked to resign. Mr Maxton was not a criminal. He might be a political offender, but so far as the man’s personal character or teaching abilities were concerned they had no charge against him.

“On a vote the previous question was poorly supported and the motion received 12 votes against 11 for the amendment.

“As the motion did not receive the support required by standing orders it did not become operative. The matter is accordingly adjourned for six months.”
