Nod to resort’s past with significant investment

- Iain Howie

Gleneagles Hotel has unveiled a stunning new look and revived accommodation as part of a massive investment programme.

A tastefully reworked Century Bar, a new bar - the Auchterarder 70 - and 35 renovated luxury bedrooms are all now open for business having been carefully upgraded, restored and created using both local and national firms’ input.

The extensive and continuing renovation of the hotel, with these finished works in phase one, are part of the investment from the new owners Ennismore.

Decorating staff moved in during March with the wraps officially coming off towards the end of June.

Under the revamp there has been a complete overhaul of the hotel’s main bar – now renamed the Century Bar – as well as the creation of a brand new bar, Auchterarder 70.

There were also renovations across 35 luxury bedrooms.

The centrepiece bar upgrade called on leading design house David Collins Studio.

Original panelling was restored to complement art deco- style lighting. Window space has been opened up to give guests a stunning view of the Ochil Hills.

Creative director Simon Rawlings, of London-based David Collins Studios, said: “The hotel’s main bar is an important room within the property.

“It’s transition to the Century Bar needed a respectful approach, one which references the art deco grandeur, whilst making a charming, light-filled room by day, and a cosy intimate room by night.”

Auchterarder 70 was created in a further nod to the renowned resort’s history.

Taking the hotel’s original telephone number, the cosy eating space with views over the 18th hole at the King’s Course is in the Dormy Clubhouse and is the creation of celebrated designers Macaulay Sinclair.

Guests can also ring up their table orders with a wooden crank telephone mounted in the feature space.

Ennismore founder Sharan Pasricha said: “We’re delighted to launch these exceptional spaces which simultaneously acknowledge our rich heritage whilst marking a new chapter in the Gleneagles story.

“As part of the evolution of the brand, we wanted the designs to reflect all the unique Gleneagles elements – the stunning views, the art deco origins, the country pursuits – which have inspired generations of guests, but we also wanted them to breathe new life into the hotel.”

He added: “The bar launches have also created exciting new dining concepts and we look forward to introducing these experiences to our residents and guests.”
