Perth and Kinross councillors have voted in favour of plans to bring the Stone of Scone back to Perthshire.

The council was asked to approve proposals for two cultural attractions: one the transformation of the existing Perth Museum and Art Gallery, and the other a major new visual arts venue and social space.

The latter site has, after consideration, been identified as Perth’s City Hall, which has been lying unused for over a decade.

Council leader Ian Miller said the plans were three years in the making.

He said: “The people of Perth have got behind this initiative.

“Let’s get behind the people of Perth.”

The report highlighted an “opportunity to invest in Perth’s own cultural assets and showcase its unique place at the heart of Scotland’s story”, with the aim to develop “a year-round programme of major, international standard temporary exhibitions which continually refresh the visitor offer”.

Depute chief executive Jim Valentine said: “This would place a new attraction, bringing in at least 160,000 visitors a year, right into the heart of the city, and bring the City Hall back to life, with a new purpose in line with the city plan’s aspirations.”

Councillor Miller said that although the plan to return the stone to Perthshire wasn’t entirely new, the argument was stronger than ever.
