-

Reporting of the two great offensives of 1916 continued to lead the war news – the Battle of Verdun in the west and the Brusilov Offensive in the east.

The great Battle of Verdun, which has lasted over 130 days, appears to have reached its most critical stage.

“The Germans at the end of last week renewed their efforts with extreme desperation, but part of the ground they won on Friday has been re-taken by the French, and, in the words of a French semi-official report, the enemy’s gains have cost them ‘a fabulous price’.

“The Thiaumont and Fleury regions on the east side of the Meuse were the scenes of the fiercest struggles. The Germans up till Monday held some houses in the village of Fleury, which is less than four miles from Verdun.”

In the east it was reported that the Russians were“At the gates of Hungary.”

“According to advices received in Rome from Petrograd the Russians have entered the Austrian province of Transylvania, in Hungary.

“With the capture of the town of Kuty in the north-west of the Bukowina, and of Kimpolung in the south-west, the whole of Bukowina is now in Russian hands.

“Thursday’s bulletins prove that the Russians have dealt the enemy another heavy blow. A message received from Petrograd state that on the Southern front the Russians captured 221 officers and 10,285 men.”
