Safety on roads top of agenda

Talks on 30mph sign switch

- Rachel Blackburn

Road safety will be top of the agenda when Comrie community councillors return next week for their first meeting following the summer break.

The problem of traffic driving too quickly through the village will be among the issues up for discussion at the meeting on the evening of Thursday, September 1.

The organisation’s chair Sandra McRitchie told the Herald there are problems with cars speeding as they come into Comrie from the St Fillans end of the village.

And she wants Bear Scotland, which is responsible for the A85 trunk road which runs through Comrie, to consider moving the 30mph limit sign further out.

She said: “There are a lot of concerns among residents that traffic is driving too fast through the village and we’d like to see the 30mph sign moved further out of the village towards St Fillans.

“This would mean that cars would start to slow down sooner as they come into the village from that end and also stay below 30mph for longer as they are heading out of Comrie.

“There are quite a few families now who live on the road just beyond the 30 mph sign and their doors open onto the main road while their gardens are across the road. So there are concerns for children who could be coming out to cross over the road to go to school or elsewhere.

“It would be terrible if something were to happen.”

Mrs McRitchie added: “We’ll be discussing that at the meeting with a view to contacting Bear Scotland about moving the sign although we’ve already had indications that this might be difficult to do.”

There will also be the usual roads, treasurer’s and councillor’s reports plus a round-up of crime in the area from the community police officer.

The community council meeting takes place at the White Church in the village at 7.30pm on Thursday September 1. All welcome.
