British and French advance at the Somme

There were reports of successes on the Somme front, and Romania had quickly become involved in the fighting following its entry to the war.

“A combined attack was made by the British and French troops on the Somme on Sunday, and resulted in important gains. The Britiah captured part of Ginchy and the whole of Guillemot while from Ginchy to near Falfemont Farm on the east side of Mouquet Farm they also gained ground. Several hundred prisoners were taken.

“A Paris bulletin states that the French attack was made on a front of about four miles from the district north of Maurepas up to the river, and that the troops took possession of every one of their fixed objectives.

“A German counter-attack on a large scale was beaten back in disorder.

“The French also report determined battles on the Meuse front. The fire of the French artillery caught the enemy infantry endeavouri­ng to advance and a precipitat­e retirement followed, many dead being left on the field.”

In the Balkans: “A Bukharest (sic) bulletin speaks of lively fighting over the week-end, and the capture of over 1000 men.

“The capture is announced of the Transylvan­ian town of Betszok and the Romanians have also occupied the hills west of the town.

“Austrian admissions of‘ strategica­l’ re treats show that on Sunday last, after one week of war, the Romanian armies had occupied more than 7000 miles of Hungarian territory.”
