Praise for Irish regiments in Somme attack

-

“The British renewed their offensive north of the Somme on Saturday afternoon, and dealt the enemy some hard blows” reported the Herald.

“After severe fighting our troops made themselves masters of the village of Ginchy in its entirety, and they also captured the German positions lying between Ginchy and Leuze Wood. This success constitutes a most serious threat to the German hold on Combles.

“The British troops also went forward east of the High wood and north-east of Pozieres, taking prisoners and inflicting very heavy casualties.

“Special mention is made of the dash and gallantry of the Irish regiments that which took part in the capture of Guillemont.”

The French had also been in action on the Somme front -“A Paris bulletin of Tuesday gave details of a brilliant attack by the French troops north of the Somme. Important German positions between Combles and the river were taken with great dash, and almost 1500 prisoners taken.”

Meanwhile in the east it seems that Romania’s entry to the war had received a set-back.

“There is a good deal of perplexity as to where the Germans and Bulgarians got the 20,000 prisoners which they claim to have taken at Turtukai.

“There were not as many Roumanians in the district as the enemy says he has captured.”
